Blomdahl is a medical-grade ear piercing system developed by physicians in Sweden. It uses single-use, sterile cartridges and medical plastic or titanium earrings to minimize the risk of infection and allergic reactions.
How is it different from mall or jewelry store piercing guns?
Unlike traditional piercing guns, the Blomdahl system:
Uses fully disposable cartridges (nothing is reused between patients)
Is non-touch and hygienic—the earring and back are never touched by hands
Uses medical-grade materials suitable for sensitive skin and children
Is performed by a licensed medical professional in a sterile manner
At what age can babies or children get their ears pierced?
We pierce babies as young as 2 months old, once they have had their first set of vaccines. Ear piercing is also offered for children, tweens, and teens up to age 18.
Is the procedure safe for infants and children?
Yes. When performed with the Blomdahl system, ear piercing is safe for all ages. The system is designed to minimize tissue trauma and infection risk. Aftercare instructions are provided to ensure proper healing.
What materials are the earrings made from?
Blomdahl earrings are made from medical-grade titanium or medical plastic, both of which are nickel-free and hypoallergenic, making them ideal for sensitive skin and children prone to metal allergies.
How does the process work?
The ears are cleaned with antiseptic.
Placement is marked and confirmed with the parent or teen.
The piercing is performed quickly with sterile, single-use cartridges.
Aftercare instrucsions are reviewed in detail.
The process takes just a few minutes and most children tolerate it very well!
Does it hurt?
Children may feel a quick pinch or pressure for a second, similar to a vaccination. Discomfort is brief and usually fades quickly.
How do I care for the new piercings?
Clean the front and back of the piercings twice daily with Blomdahl aftercare solution or gentle saline (ideally in a spray form). If you need recommendations on cleaning products, please let the provider know.
Keep the earrings in place continuously for at least 6-8 weeks.
Avoid touching or twisting the earrings with unwashed hands.
After 6-8 weeks, switch only to hypoallergenic earrings or gold earrings until the piercing is fully healed.
You should wear earrings in the new piercings continuously for the first year to prevent premature closure.
What if my child has allergies or sensitive skin?
Blomdahl earrings are specifically designed for sensitive skin. We recommend medical plastic for anyone with a history of metal sensitivity.
What are the risks of ear piercing?
Risks are minimal when performed under sterile conditions. Possible issues include mild redness, swelling, or irritation—all of which usually resolve with proper care. Infection or allergic reaction is rare.
What if vaccines are delayed or declined?
Tetanus protection is recommended before piercing. If you choose to proceed without vaccination, you acknowledge that the risk of tetanus or infection is rare, but possible, and still consent to the procedure.
How long until the piercing is fully healed?
Healing for the earlobes takes 6-8 weeks. It is advised to then switch out the Blomdahl earrings used for piercing to hypoallergenic earrings or gold earrings.
Can I use my own earrings for the initial piercing?
For safety, the initial piercing must be done with sterile Blomdahl medical earrings. After healing, you can switch to other hypoallergenic earrings.
Do you provide aftercare products?
Yes—we provide or recommend Blomdahl aftercare solution and detailed home instructions to promote safe healing.
Is there a consent form required?
Yes. For minors, a parent or guardian must provide written consent acknowledging understanding of the procedure, aftercare, and associated risks. The form is available once you book the appointment.
What is the cost for ear piercing?
The cost is $150 which includes the earrings used to pierce the patient.
Do you have earrings for purchase after I take out the earrings used in the original piercing?
Yes, Blomdahl provides a host of beautiful earrings that are made of medical grade titanium. The provider has designs on hand to purchase for $30 per pair.
Is there a travel fee?
There is a travel fee of $25 if the location is 10 miles outside of Claremont, California.
What should I do if there is redness or irritation?
Clean with saline and avoid rotating the earrings. If symptoms persist beyond 48 hours, contact Happy Home Pediatrics for advice and evaluation.
